Fabliha’s Oral History

Description

Fabliha is a gender expansive, South Asian person who was 23 at the time of recording. They discussed what it was like growing up in Brooklyn to immigrant, Muslim parents. Fabliha covered what it was like not having many friends, going to an all girls school, being bullied, having PCOS, and existing in the 'young and gifted' program. Fabliha spoke about how class and race affected her growing up especially in relation to her gender and sexuality. She discovered her queerness in high school senior year but experienced isolation and loneliness in a negative environment. Fabliha candidly covered the importance of art-making, queer theory, and activism to her own sexuality and gender. They spoke earnestly about being outed by a family member and the damage that was done. Fabliha spent time discussing her South-Asian and Indo-Caribbean queer organizing work. They ended with a discussion about what its is like meeting other Lesbians in New York City, what identifying as a Lesbian means to them, and when they are happiest as a Lesbian.
