Carolina’s Oral History

Description

Carolina is a gender nonconforming latine person who was 19 at the time of recording. They discuss growing up with a single mom in a Catholic Brazilian household in Brooklyn, New York. Carolina covers what it was like being class disadvantaged as the scholarship kid at a majority white Catholic private school. They also candidly spoke about growing up in an environment hostile to queerness from such a young age. Carolina's formative exposure to gay people was mostly online and later in life through one of their best friends, Jenna. They spoke about the importance of art making and how it relates to their lesbianism and lesbian as gender. They said creation was an expression of gender an is an inherently erotic action where they make something in the world that is for them alone. Carolina talks extensively about Queer and Lesbian theory as well as building Lesbian community at a historically women's college. They spoke about what being a Lesbian means to them and when they are happiest as a Lesbian.
